From the wood block panel to configurable cross-laminated timber 

For us, quality and innovation are not laurels that you earn just once in order to rest on them. In fact, we see them as challenges in a continuous process that we actively undergo with a passion, not infrequently in dialogue with customers. So it's not without pride that we look back on a series of successes that substantiate our claim to innovation leadership.

Universal configurability

In the development of our products, we focus on intelligent and sustainable multifunctionality. Hence, with components made of LIGNO®, tasks can be accomplished today that will become building standards in future – for example where sound insulation is concerned.

The adaptability of the LIGNO® cross-laminated timber ribbed and box elements was fully standardised in 2019: 
From now on, individual configurability is possible in order to meet the requirements of almost all building classes: With regard to fire protection, sound insulation, aesthetics, room acoustics and installation capability, Lignotrend elements can be purposefully adapted – and users can now do that themselves: the online configurator enables the simple transfer of the planning requirements into the technical characteristics of the LIGNO® element.

Individual cross-sections for complex requirements in the construction sector

In the case of large buildings, the requirements for building components often come not only from structural planning. Fire protection often demands high fire resistance and building services require a lot of space for cable routing.

Today, Lignotrend can resolve typical collisions of such complex requirements very flexibly through the suitable design of individual element cross-sections. One example is the so-called element LIGNO® Rippe Q2i. It was developed in 2015 as a ceiling for a multi-storey school building. This special element for large spans and increased sound insulation is designed in such a way that it achieves 90 min fire resistance, the routing of large cable cross-sections no longer reduces the fire protection despite being revisable.

The LIGNO® Rippe Q2i is one of 12 innovative products nominated for the AIT/xia-BAU-TREND at BAU 2017, the world's leading trade fair for architecture.

Even larger spans in wood

In commercial architecture, it is important that large ceiling spans can be realised with one building material, e.g. in school construction, where classrooms are typically 7 to 8 m wide.

This is a major challenge for timber construction: the ceilings must be prevented from deflecting too much or from swinging. Many manufacturers - initially also Lignotrend - pursue the complex solution approach of the wood-concrete composite.

However, by further developing the process of block bonding, a pure wood-wood composite element is created at Lignotrend 2007: no concrete is necessary for the so-called element variant "BV". As a ceiling component, the new element can bridge spans of 10 m, as a roof component up to 18 m. The special manufacturing process is unique.

Sustainability viewed holistically

Again and again it becomes clear in the distribution of Lignotrend products that consumers are looking for safety in the large range of building products with regard to ecological and building biology criteria. The quality of timber construction products is also questioned in this regard.

The "natureplus" quality certification stands out from the plethora of eco-labels due to its ambitious approach. Its particularly strict test criteria define sustainability holistically, not only according to ecological, but also health and function-related aspects - aspects that have also been on Lignotrend's agenda from the very beginning. 

In 2006, Lignotrend receives natureplus certification and is the first certified manufacturer ever in its product category. The Lignotrend elements are thus among the best products for sustainable building.

2005 | U*psi-insulation joists

Large insulation thicknesses efficiently and from natural material

Energy efficiency has gained enormous importance and legal regulations for the insulation of buildings are becoming more demanding. Climate protection on the one hand and rising energy prices on the other are motivation to insulate building envelopes in the best possible way.

Lignotrend's sensitivity for the sustainable use of natural resources has led to the development of its own product, which can be used to produce large insulation thicknesses from renewable raw materials. 

The U*psi insulation joist is a ladder-like element that is used to create a compartment while minimising thermal bridges, which is then filled with cellulose or wood fibre flakes, for example. By the way: The artificial word "U*psi" (pronounced "upsi") is made up of two formula symbols for characteristic values of thermal insulation: U for thermal transmittance, psi for the thermal bridge coefficient).

From 2005 onwards, different variants for different areas of application are introduced one after the other: First type F for facing shells, then type T for timber frame construction and finally type S as an adjustment stand for uneven or sloping existing constructions.

2005 | Flame retardancy and fire resistance

Flame retardant surfaces & fire resistance up to REI90

With larger projects, there are more and more tasks to be solved in the area of fire protection: Multi-storey buildings require a higher level of fire resistance, and places of assembly demand flame-retardant surfaces. 

The layered construction principle of the Lignotrend elements makes it possible to react flexibly to this: If required, the body of the element can be provided with additional fire protection layers or pre-treated cover layers. This means that in 2005, for example, real wood acoustic elements can pass tests for flame resistance for the first time (classification B1 according to DIN or B-s2,d0 according to EN). Lignotrend is also opening up new market segments here.

2004 | LIGNO® Acoustic light

Genuine wood acoustic panels

The genuine wood design on the statically supporting wooden elements inspires planners and users and awakens the desire to be able to solve good room acoustics with wood fibre absorbers behind genuine wood slats also subsequently with a light absorber panel - in building renovation or in new construction, as cladding of constructions made of other materials, e.g. concrete. 

From 2005, Lignotrend offers LIGNO® Acoustic light, a panelling element consisting entirely of the natural material wood. The interior design division develops into a separate business unit and the product is given a separate production line.

2004 | Acoustic slat profile

Aesthetic acoustic slats

Room acoustics is a discipline that is relevant to value in almost all building categories, but it is not yet consistently found in building regulations and awareness of it must first be created in many places. Lignotrend is taking advantage of this opportunity.

As of 2004, a new thin-lined acoustic slat profile is available for building components. It supplements the board profile LIGNO® Acoustic classic, which is mostly used in hall construction, with an aesthetic variant for use with lower room heights, e.g. in schools, offices or residential buildings.

The look of the fine slat profile in combination with the knotty white fir slats becomes typical for Lignotrend elements.

2004 | Knotless silver fir

Plain element surfaces without knots

In 2004, Lignotrend sets a timber construction architecture trend that is reflected almost abruptly in increased attention from architects and interior designers as well as in incoming orders: 

With knotless silver fir wood, a light design surface is introduced that was not previously available on wooden construction elements. By removing knots during the manufacturing process, the wood surface has lost its rusticity. 

With the silver fir, a tree species native to the Black Forest is being used in a new way, and at the same time it is a source of hope for the forestry sector in the development of climate-stable forests.

Project-specific timber construction advice from the manufacturer

Building with wood is far less standardised than other construction methods. What initially sounds like a disadvantage, on the other hand, also holds the possibility of responding individually to the wishes and requirements of building projects. 

If desired, Lignotrend will accompany the work on the optimal timber construction solution as early as the planning stage: planning offices and fabricators can fall back on on-site advice from expert consultants. Construction details, but also special topics of building physics such as sound insulation or fire protection can be discussed early on in the project.

2001 | LIGNO® Acoustic classic

Load-bearing surface element with integrated room acoustics

An enquiry from a customer stimulated the imagination of the creative minds at Lignotrend at the beginning of 2001: A roof element with a sound-absorbing effect was needed for an industrial hall to reduce the noise level of the machines in the building.

The requirement is solved by inserting sound absorbers made of natural soft wood fibre into the cavities typical for Lignotrend elements in the factory. With the LIGNO® Acoustic classic element, the room acoustic requirement can be solved in the "shell" construction without the need for expensive and time-consuming interior fittings later on.

The reverberation-reducing effect is convincing: only a short time later, the new element is used again in two large event halls at Messe Friedrichshafen. Lignotrend has laid the foundation for a competence that will become a success and sales factor in the years to come.

1998 | LIGNO® Ceiling

Solid wood ceilings with high sound insulation

Based on the principle of the wood block panel, a separate ceiling element is also being developed and a patent and building authority approval applied for. This enables the construction of complete buildings in Lignotrend quality. 

The element, which was introduced in 1997, represents a new design option for timber construction architecture with a flat, factory-finished timber soffit. By shear coupling of the individual elements, a finished static slice is created. 

Unlike traditional wooden ceilings, LIGNO® ceiling components achieve a particularly high level of sound insulation and raise the quiet quality possible in timber construction to a new level.

1995 | Klimaholzhaus

Holistic approach

Behind the product is an approach to buildings made of wood that goes beyond ecological aspects and also includes indoor climate and health. In 1995, Lignotrend or licensed timber construction companies as product users appeared on the market for the first time with the brand "Das Lignotrend Klimaholzhaus" (more information at www.klimaholzhaus.com). 

With the new construction principle based on the wooden block panel, the climate-regulating properties of solid wood can be used particularly effectively to regulate the indoor climate. Temperature and air humidity maintain a comfortable level all year round, which naturally prevents respiratory complaints and allergies. 

The Klimaholzhaus philosophy is formative for the company's success in the residential construction market.

1992 | LIGNO® Wall

New solid wood wall element

The flat, massive wood block panel is used as a completely new product, initially for storey-high, load-bearing wall components in house construction. The first buildings were built as early as 1992. There were no design specifications in the DIN standards, so the material behaviour is investigated in cooperation with research institutes - for example, for the so-called "rolling shear" that occurs in the crosswise element structure. 

The findings on the static properties are the basis for a building authority approval. In addition, the properties with regard to fire resistance and sound insulation have to be tested and confirmed in the laboratory for a wide variety of component structures. 

In January 1994, the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) issues the first building authority approval for the wall elements.
