Soundproofing
Optimal impact and airborne sound insulation in timber construction
The acoustic design of a building with the goal of satisfied users is the best investment in value stability. Lignotrend aims to satisfy the highest comfort demands with its components for ceiling, roof and wall. Solutions are optimised in such a way that high design aesthetics are possible with visible real wood surfaces.
Building acoustics in timber construction: effective against noise
Comfort sound insulation with LIGNO® CLT
Users' comfort requirements with regard to sound insulation have generally increased in the past years. Since the DIN values only fulfil minimum requirements, Lignotrend has already adapted its component superstructures to improved noise protection standards.
The sound insulation levels from the guideline "Sound insulation in timber construction: principles and preliminary measurement", which is published by the Timber Information Service, are suitable as target values:
- BASIS as a minimum requirement according to DIN 4109,
- BASIS+ for increased sound insulation, and
- KOMFORT, the highest level, which includes sensitive frequency ranges
that DIN has omitted up to now
With regard to the sound insulation capacities of its ceiling, roof and wall components, Lignotrend orientates itself to the KOMFORT level and strives to attain the values that apply there. High-quality timber architecture can thus also offer the best possible sound insulation.

Increased sound insulation with visible wood
Important for the design: Lignotrend achieves optimal sound insulation quality without cladding the soffit of the cross-laminated timber ceilings!
Other timber construction methods use plasterboard cladding on walls and ceilings to improve sound insulation. Components made of LIGNO®, conversely, achieve optimal sound protection values even with finished real wood surfaces – closed over the entire surface or with acoustic strips.

Structural ceilings: Improve impact sound insulation, avoid walking noises
Components for separating ceilings made of LIGNO are designed in such a way that impact sound transmission is avoided particularly effectively. A series of different superstructures was tested in the laboratory – in particular with optimisation of the meaningful spectrum adaptation value CI.
During the development, Ln,w values of up to 37 dB resulted for the impact sound level. On the one hand, this offers sufficient reserves for the additions for the secondary sound paths that have to be incorporated into the calculation of the sound insulation prognosis. The increased requirements according to DIN 4109-5:2020 for ceilings between different apartments and working areas can thus be fulfilled. On the other hand, muffled rumbling walking noises in the frequency range of 50 to 100 Hz are also attenuated efficiently. Lignotrend ceilings can also attain the latest target values for the sum value Ln,w + CI,50-2500, which is relevant for this.
Two main mechanisms contribute to the increase in impact sound insulation in ceiling constructions: On the one hand, the element channels in the raw ceiling are loaded on the building site (usually with a loose limestone gravel filling) so that a favourable ratio of mass to rigidity is created: 100-150 kg gravel per m² are regarded as a favourable order of magnitude. On the other, an optimised decoupled superstructure of load distributing and impact sound insulating panels, screed and floor covering is laid on the ceiling elements.

Load-bearing partition walls
Lignotrend interior wall components are adapted to the sound insulation requirements in the building in accordance with the installation situation, e.g. by plastering on both sides, with a wood facing on one side or, in case of correspondingly increased requirements, with decoupled facing shell and cladding. Depending on the desired design, a high-quality visible wood surface is possible – closed or with an acoustically active, profiled wood surface.
Various component superstructures for solid timber walls are predefined and tested in the laboratory for increased sound insulation requirements.
Optimised components keep external noise out
Exterior walls, roof components
The layered construction principle of walls made of LIGNO® also makes sound insulation particularly safe. Lignotrend has also defined superstructures for exterior walls and roof components and had them tested in the laboratory. The highest sound insulation quality on the building site is reliably guaranteed with them.

Consider secondary sound paths too
For a prognosis of the airborne and impact sound insulation on the building site, Lignotrend can also supply the necessary values for secondary sound paths for the combination with solid timber and timber frame walls.
If CLT web or box elements are arranged longitudinally over an interior wall with increased sound insulation, the support detail there can be adapted accordingly. Lignotrend has formulated standardised solutions for this.
